Why are Max's Mints organic (and better)?

19 April 2019

Suppose you are in a supermarket/hip lunch tent/gas station or the Bijenkorf, and there you see them for the first time: Max's Organic Mints. In a split second you make a judgment: new, unknown, nice looking and organic. Huh? Organic? Is that possible with mints? And why is that important?

I can very well imagine that these types of questions arise for you. Mints are also not the first product that comes to mind when I think of organic. Of course, that doesn't mean it isn't important! That is why I would like to explain to you why Max's Mints is organic and what we think is important.

Wat maakt een product biologisch?

  • If a product has an organic quality mark, then no synthetic (artificial) pesticides have been used in the main ingredients of the product.

  • To receive an organic quality mark, the product must consist of at least 95% of ingredients that have been grown organically.

  • Four international core values have been established from which organic development continues*:

  1. Health: both of humans and of ecosystems. For this reason, artificial fertilizers, veterinary medicines and additives that could have health effects are avoided as much as possible in organic farming.
  2. Ecology: Which means that organic production must contribute to the protection and improvement of the shared living environment, in the areas of landscape, climate, habitats, biodiversity, air and water.
  3. Fairness: In how we treat people and animals. And in the price that a product costs.
  4. Care: How do we ensure that we treat the earth with care?

Max's better organic Mints

Now that you know what organic means, I can more easily explain to you why we chose to make organic mints and why I believe that it is really better.

Max's Mints are made from organic sugars; corn syrup and dextrose. These sugars are grown in Austria under organic conditions; in other words, without burdening the ecosystem with synthetic pesticides. This way, the biodiversity of the country is better safeguarded and the groundwater is not polluted.

By the way, the fact that the sugar comes from Austria and not from, for example, Brazil, also means that we do not have to worry about agricultural workers working in appalling conditions. These kinds of problems simply (almost) do not arise in the EU. Nice bonus!

Max's seasonings are not (always) organic at the moment, but we are also working hard on that! Fortunately, these are such small quantities that the contribution of the seasonings to the end product is limited 🙂 The seasonings (think of lemon extract and eucalyptus oil) are of course always 100% natural.

Mint you soon!

Oh and of course you don't have to buy Max's Mints just because they are organic. We would prefer that you take Max's Mints with you because you like them and that they are organic is an extra bonus!
